Aphids galore already in February & trying garlic

  • @bcpathome thank you for your tip. Do you have any favourite chives? I suppose the other thing is chives don't get too big and grow in a neat way. Do you find a small 9cm size un-potted supermarket chive bundle would work on each rose plant or do you grow many more around each plant?  :)

I have always grown a chive plant bought ready potted from a garden centre , can’t remember the name of the actual type . It shows a pink flower later in the year but , if you cut and use ( or not use) the chive leaves the plant stays small . I only have one between 3 roses and find it enough so in a whole rose bed of say 10 or so you’d only need 3 chive plants ,planted randomly .Hope it works for you . It always has for me .

It takes a lot of willpower to leave a few aphids alive so the ladybirds 🐞 have something to eat but in my experience it’s the best way.
  • Oh thanks @bcpathome that is encouraging. Sounds like just a few will do the trick then. I think it would be worthwhile for me to try this. Members of the allium family are often mentioned as perfect partners for roses but I had so many other jobs to do that I never got around to it. Even better that chives have culinary uses too! It is good to hear your first-hand experience.

  • Oh yes @debs64 willpower is the word! The aphids arrived too early, I mean February! I think the arbutus has a case of honey fungus now so I was really on the back-foot from the start unfortunately. Do you garden with the thought of encouraging ladybirds? Have you any hibernating ladybirds at the moment?
