Too right.  My soil is good but rain was scarce last summer and heatwaves in the 40s too so my bulbs turned out small.   This year I've planted mine a trowel's length apart and the rows 18" apart so there's less competition.  They'll get a feed as soon as the shoots start showing and watering till established.    Regular weeding will help too.

The plants were falling over and just getting browner.  I pulled them up and the 'bulb' was just a soggy little ball of nothing!

I'll do it differently next time

    Thanks for all useful comments

Better luck next time @InTheMoorlands.   It really is worth seeking out garlic for planting but they tend to come in packs of 6 to 10 bulbs which means, when yu've separated each clove for planting, an awful lot of garlic.

You could share them with a  friend or two.  However, if your don't want that many then try planting the freshest, firmest bulb you can find in the shops and get the compost and planting distances right.  You'll need to make sure the container is cleaned and the compost is fresh for best results and then feed them too as planting composts exhaust their supplies of fertiliser afetr just 80 to 90 days.
