Alder root problem

My mum had an Alder cut down years ago but says the roots are still growing and are starting to destroy a retaining wall next to a pond.

Is this possible or is it likely to be the roots of something else even though she has no other large trees in the garden!?

If the tree is dead the roots xcan't live.

The growth you show looks like Hydrangea petiolaris to me.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

Don't forget - Alder, along with Chestnut, Ash, Birch, Hornbeam etc is a species that, to use modern parlance, can be 'coppiced', i.e. cut down on a regular basis and re-growing in between.  From the pic, I'd try cutting the foot of stump shown back as near to the concrete as possible.  Drill a hole in it.  Fill with a rotting chemical BUT THEN TIE A STRONG PLASTIC BAG OVER IT TO PREVENT POLLUTING THE POND.  Two bags if you have them or a suitably sized plastic bottle over the first bag.
