  where have they been up til now? If they've been outside they're good to plant, if they've never seen the outside world they'll need hardening off

  Looks like they're in one of those plastic growhouses, so just put them out for am hour or two each day [if the weather isn't hideous] and do that for a week or so, gradually increasing the amount of time. By then they should be ok, but again - don't plant unless the ground is frost free, and in good condition. 
  A nice sunny site with friable, free draining soil, is their preference

  Could they go into the ground now and be covered by an old furniture throw if the weather gets cold over night

  Much of the country is still pretty chilly, so unless you're in the far South West, l'd be inclined to wait another week or two.

  Don't put them out and then start covering them. That will do them no good at all.
  If the forecasts aren't suitable for getting them in the ground - ie snow/frost/ice, just wait for a few weeks until it is more suitable. If your soil is cold and wet [very common at this time of year] that's not much good either. 
  There's nothing to gain from planting things out too early, especially when they've been undercover for a while ,and are just starting to grow.
  Just put them outside for a while on decent days so that they'll be nice and sturdy, and well acclimatised when you do plant them
