Peat-Free Nursery

Can anyone recommend a reliable nursery that is peat-free/low peat and has an online shop? I am looking for perennials.
Thank you

  • There are many nurseries which claim to be Peat Free.  I think several have been mentioned on this forum in the past.  Not sure how well the Search function is working but you could try it ?
Alternatively, if you are after perennials, make a list of the nurseries you feel could provide those specific plants and ask them. Once you have narrowed it down, ask again on here for recommendations re service, good packaging, price and condition of plants.
  • I think Sarah Raven is peat-free nowadays and her plants are first class and gorgeous

I can thoroughly recommend this nursery, I have used for several years and the plants I’ve received have always been a good size and excellent quality. Postage is not cheap but they go to a lot of trouble with packaging to make sure plants reach you in tip top condition quickly.

All plants grown on the nursery are peat free, any plants they sell that have not been grown peat free will say so.

Beth Chatto's are peat-free and have been for some time. Like Sarah Raven, they're pretty expensive but excellent quality plants.

  • I haven’t tried Beth Chatto yet but what I like about Sarah Raven’s site is that once you’re a customer there are plenty of offers to come your way.  Occasional free delivery & 20% off here and there.

Paddock nurseries are peat and plastic free.

    Bluebell Cottage Nursery

This what they say re: peat

"We propagate most of our plants from our own stock plants in the gardens and our nursery stock beds in which you can see the parent plants at their mature size. We buy in some new stock each year, using UK grown sources where possible and as bare root or young plants. We only use peat-free compost at the nursery to pot plants on. Some of the young plants supplied to us in spring are grown by our suppliers in peat. If it is important to you to avoid all peat please ask and we will check for you."

Avondale Nursery now have an online shop. But if you are passing their nursery near Coventry, it is WELL worth a detour. (And there will be a wider range available).

  • Thank you all for the suggestions. I'm afraid Sarah Raven is out of my budget but the others certainly are worth exploring.
