Pruning "Winter Beauty"

I planted a Winter Beauty evergreen clematis towards the end of 2021 and had a couple of flowers on it. This present winter nothing at all, most probably because of the severe cold we had before the end of last year. Should I prune it at all, either now, or a bit later? The pruning guide for this plant says "Tidy" pruning, but I did nothing a year ago, so not sure what to do now. It looks very sad and leggy.

Your Winter Beauty is a group 1 clematis which means it only gets pruned, after flowering, to keep it in bounds.   When it's much older you may need to do some renovation pruning but that won't be for years yet.

The main thing about this variety is that it is not reliably hardy and won't perform well if exposed to winter cold, driving winds, snows and frosts so try and imrove shelter to reduce the impact of these and improve its capacity to flower.
