Anyone had this variety in this state at the end of winter and its returned the following summer? My boriensis look more promising, as they have green at the base or even new shoots, but these rigida just look dead.
I wait until I see the new growth before cutting back last year's growth - then I know where they are. Chances are if I cut it back earlier I'd probably dig them up by mistake during my Spring tidy-up.

The roots are just under the soil surface, so use a hoe carefully - if you use one

So you cut yours back "Pete.8" and you get fresh shoots in late spring?
