Too early to plant?

Hiya,

Just wondering if it’s ok to buy and plant perennials at this time of year? I buy online and they’ve finally got something I’ve been wanting in stock so I don’t want to miss out on it but I’m not sure if it’s ok to plant when there’s still a chance of frost?

Thanks.

I would only plant something that has been outside for the winter. You could pot it up and keep it protected and harden off gradually

  • Thanks. I’m pretty sure they keep all the plants outside all year round - if so, would that make it ok to plant out straight away?

yes, unless you're frozen or waterlogged

I'd be careful too, and especially as it's only February, regardless of where you are.
I'd pot it up as @nutcutlet says, and keep it sheltered.

If it was from a nursery local to your area, and the plants were big -ie not little things in 3 inch pots, and grown outdoors all winter, you might get away with it.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • These are three litre pots. Pretty sure they grow everything outside all year round. I’ll email them to see what they suggest.

I agree with Fairy re size. and also ingrowth not dried out (bare rooted as the sellers call them)
