@Fairygirl your pond is pretty awesome, I love it!

Very kind of you both. I've always had ponds  - of varying sizes and I felt I'd like a bigger one than I had, and with better light, so I removed the lawn that I'd put in about 8 years ago, and dug out the bigger pond. I had the gravel on the paths anyway, so it was just a case of getting more and planting into that instead. I also use lots of pots which I just move around depending on the time of year, so that there's always plenty of interest. This pic was August last year

I wouldn't worry about the Caltha @clematisdorset [did you change your username ? ] as it's a very useful plant. I've had that in every garden/pond too, but I have the white one for this pond edge rather than the yellow.  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • That must have been quite a project @Fairygirl and it looks beautiful and natural, like a ditch that developed over time and turned into a pond! Magical! You must have hours of watching diverse wildlife flocking to the area. Thanks for your thoughts on the Caltha/marsh marigold. The hoverflies were regular visitors to mine last year.
Yes, in fact I thought I had changed my username to something more horticulturally-fitting the day I signed up, but I agree it has only just appeared which is disconcerting....I thought the change had failed and thought no more of it. Now I have a black & red smiley face which I find rather , :( so I think I will try to find something of my own, if the system will allow that!  :)
Sorry to witness the demise of the forum. 😥😥😥😡😡😡I am Spartacus
  • So, I came across these eggs(?) this morning in my pond. Any idea who they belong to? It looks like thing has deposited a lot of snot in the water!

Frogs? Toads ? Could be either .

Not toads. They lay them in a long string.
Not sure - doesn't look like frog either - too messy and opaque, not like usual frogspawn.
Someone will know though - @wild edges probably. He might see my tag on his name and look in.

  • I'll take some more clearer photos tomorrow and post them. I have 4 books on froggies and toads and I can't find anything that looks like the 'eggs'

  • Most of the eggs were gone by this morning, but I did find a few survivors. My fellow allotment chums say they are froggy eggs, so we have put up some protection for the little ones

Hope some of them make it.
