Begonia corns - fungus

Welcome some expert advice if I may. I stored some Begonia corns early winter last year. Wrapped in paper and stored in cardboard box with air holes in the garage. Been checking on em and all seems fine, but when I checked today, some corns have a fungal growth, some not.

Firstly, can I brush off the fungus or is it a lost cause. Secondly what did I do wrong, so i don't repeat the mistake again. Thank you for your help, appropriated, Dilip

  • I would brush it off and dust the tubers with some Vitax sulpher powder ... not expensive and available online or from most garden centres.  Nowadays its usually used for soil improvement, but it's a traditional preventative for fungal growth on begonias and bulbs.

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Agree with @Dovefromabove - it doesn't look too bad and clean and dust should ensure a decent corm.
As to what you did wrong, given the weather we have had, perhaps the atmosphere in your shed was damper than you thought and the paper absorbed it ?

@Dovefromabove, that's brilliant, thank you. I know what to do when i store corns this year. This was my first try wintering corns, learning a lot from lovely folks here.

@philippasmith2, thank you, its actually stored in a garage not a shed. Good point about paper absorbed the water. I also think i need to store the boxes in an open space, so air can circulate more freely. Thanks for your comments
