Red Robin tree

Hi all
I bought a Red Robin tree last year for my late Wifes Ashes( Ashes in a vase) However I covered with a frost blanket, but the snow has squashed the plant and looks awful. Any advice roots of leaves look black.

It would be better in the ground than in a pot where it can suffer from drought, hunger and extreme cold depending on the weather and how well you water and feed it.

If you can plant it out, water it well first and then prepare a good planting hole twice as wide and just a bit deeper than the pot it's in.  Mix some garden/multi purpose compost and/or well rotted manure with the soil you've dug out and then tease the root ball loose if it's compacted and going round and round then plant at the same depth it was in the pot and water it well.

Leave it for a while till the worst of the frosts are over then prune off the dead stems with a pair of clean, sharp secateurs.  keep it watered in its first year and it should be fine and put on fresj new growth with the red colouring.

  • Hi Firstly thank you for taking the time to reply.
It was looking fine until I put the frost cover on and the snow built on top and squashed it.
As for watering stupid me just thought winter her plant  would be ok.
I have nowhere else to plant it as its all paved.
Shall I prune back or just snip leaves of?

If you can, give it a bigger and deeper pot with good, loam based John Innes type no 3 compost.   I don't water plants in winter unless we have a dry spell and they're not getting any rain but never water when frost is expected.   You will need to water yours regularly and feed it every spring with a top dressing of something like blood, fish and bone and occasional liquid feeds thru the growing season.

Don't prune at all till the worst of the frosts are over and then prune back to just above a live leaf bud.

Putting fleece on in winter can actually make things worse if it's touching the plant and a photinia Red Robin should be hardy enough to cope with snow and frost.  If it's set to get very cold you can tie bubble wrap round just the pot to help stop the roots being frozen.
