Rose potting and planting mix

Hello all, I bought a big bag of rose potting and planting mix but I only need a little for a new rose. Does anyone know what else I can use this for? Can I just use it in place of compost or will it only be suitable for certain plants? Thanks for your help

I wouldn't use it for plants that need ericaceous compost because it's probably got some lime in it, or for seeds, cuttings, pricking out seedlings, potting on very young plants etc because it'll be too rich for them. I think it'd be OK for anything else, but perhaps wasted on bedding plants. I'm guessing it's more expensive than standard multipurpose compost.

I'd say the same as @JennyJ.  It should be fine for any other woody shrubs or trees in pots or in the ground, perhaps spread as a mulch.

Should be fine for other shrubs. Roses dont like multipurpose compost so the rose mixes are usually more "soily" so not as good for annual bedding plants, but good for shrubs, perennials etc.

Is your rose pot big enough? Roses need space, 60cms tall. I used earth as well and a whole sack of rose compost.

If you've put your new rose in a small pot it will soon need potting on so keep your compost for when it does.

In any case, your rose will need regular wtareing in a pot and top up feeding as composts only contain food for 3 months and you'll be wanting your rsoe to go on blooming till late in the year.  A big enough pot and regular feeds of liquid rose or tomato fertiliser thru the growing season and an annual top dressing of fresh compost and fertiliser will keep it healthy.

  • Thanks all. The rose is going in a clay bed but I was going to use some of the potting mix and some manure as well. It was reduced at the garden centre £3 for 50l so was a bit of an impulse buy. Sounds like I might need to buy another rose..
