I have to point out that we have one of those lights outside our front door that we have never used before but last year fiancés van was targeted and a large hole cut in the door. So I switched it on. We live in an urban suburb so there are already street lights.

My in-laws were amazed when we didn't buy a house they thought was perfect, specifically that one of our reasons not to buy was that there were streetlights, the previous owner had let a bush/tree grow up around the light so some shade was offered but the entire road was still lit up. The house we bought is 4 miles from the closest streetlight, right now when I look out of my window I can see the neighbours kitchen light and a TV. But no garden lights, no streetlights, no security lights.. it's wonderful and the stars we can see here are amazing, we're 4 miles to the nearest village with streetlights in one direction but 10 miles in the next and a good 15 miles from the closest town.
  • Our neighbour has a cool white light on in has back garden in the evening but I think it turns off around midnight. My partner is into his astronomy so I might mention that to him and see if we can find a work around.

I grew up in a village with no street lights. When I was about twelve some new people moved there from a town and I was at their house after dark and when I went to walk home they offered to drive me instead. They couldn't understand that I was happy to walk home in the dark. A recent bat survey up there found 7 or 8 species of bat foraging up and down the road at night.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
