Pittosporum

Hi. I planted a number of pittosporum balls last year - a few of them have dropped a lot of leaves - I suspect frost damage from the cold spell before Christmas. Will the leaves re-grow on the bare stems? Or should I prune the stems to encourage new growth? Thanks

Hi @Ennyl  We had a lot of leaf drop on some of our Pittosporums this Winter. This is the first time we have had this (we grow about 7 different varieties). They are not fully hardy, so only time will tell if yours and ours will regrow.

Where we have trimmed our Pittosporums back quite aggressively in the past, they have taken quite a while to regrow, so my advice would be to be patient. See how they are looking later in the Spring. To help them, you could give them a mulch of well rotted manure around the base, but keep it away from the trunk, so it can breath.

You could also give them a liquid feed every couple of weeks or so, starting in the Spring. Keep an eye out for new shoots. Even where sections of our plants looked quite dead in the past, they have always regrown eventually.

I trust yoi mean tenuifolium.  Mine came from seeds I filched from Highdown Gardens.  And is not dropping leaves.  I first grew it too tall and have cut it back several times at various times of the year.  It doesn't seem to mind.  Poor soil, never fed.
