Getting our garage emptied

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
We want to get our garage emptied prior to demolition. On the assumption that if you can't remember what's in there, you don't need it we just want to get someone to shift the lot.
How do you know they won't fly tip it and how can you tell if their permits are genuine?

When we had our garage cleared out, I used a company that was on trust a trade. I asked to see their waste licence and insurance and asked for photo copies of them. Also ask for contact details of previous customers, most trades people have a back catalogue of happy punters. Any decent company will be happy to do this. Also, be sensible. If you are quoted £50 then clearly they aren't legit.
  • There is a register of licenced waste carriers on data.gov.uk. Worth a look to see if they are listed and or check their paperwork.

In addition to the checks, I would photograph any vehicles they are using, and the people doing the work.  If they don't agree to any of that, I would find somebody else.  The alternative is to hire a skip.

We hired a skip when we demolished ours and disposed of the contents.  If you have one just for the rubble it doesn’t cost very much but if you’re putting everything in there,  all mixed waste, it cost a lot of money.
I don’t know what you have to do if you live on a main road and don’t have a drive.

I'm afraid a skip just isn't practical. The garage is at the end of the garden with an access road. There is a turn in the road that makes it impossible to deliver a skip @Lyn

If enough of it is saleable, why not try one of the 'House Clearance' firms that advertise?

The 'house clearance' firms are often the real cowboys unfortunately.
You might get some recommendations if you have one of those 'in your area' sites, or one of the booklets through the door. We get the latter every so often with firms which are recognised by the council as reliable and endorsed.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I was going to suggest that it might be worth contacting your local council for a list of, or recommendations for, approved firms in your area. If nothing else, if they do turn out to be cowboys, you can blame the council!

If you can't get a personal recommendation from someone you trust (!) then l agree that Checkatrade

    https://www.checkatrade.com/

    or Trust a trader
    https://www.trustatrader.com/

are definitely worth checking out (search for waste removal), plus the local council as previously mentioned.
I have no connection to either, but neighbours have used both thesesites and been pleased with the results.
You could also try Nextdoor. (The website that is 😁).
