New to Allotmenting, and a little daunted!

Hi 👋 

New to the forum! Hello!

Having been on the waiting list for 5.5y, our number came up. We have been given the opportunity to take on a half plot at our nearby Allotments. We are thrilled, excited & a little overwhelmed!

The plot doesn't look like some of the nightmares that people inherit, but it is covered in thick grass (though not too long, thankfully). Theres a small area of it thats been covered, so my plan was to start there. However, I'd love to get some experienced advice on how to handle the grass situation. Looking online, many siggest digging the sods up and laying them grass to grass with a cover - does this look plausible and has anyone had any experience with a plot in a similar state? Thank you in advance!

    Easier to make it out the right way. There is a problem getting the photos the right way up. I'm sure someone will be able to give you good advice. Welcome to the forum.  :)

    I had an allotment.  I dug 2 test spits to check.  It looked OK.  It turned out that everywhere else was couch grass dominated.  So lots of spuds year1, and lots spuds with stolons right through.

    Yes it looks like couch grass (twitch) it is very persistent and turning upside down won't stop it, the best thing is to dig it out or weed killer if you don't mind using poison.

    I have taken over an allotment in similar condition and my daughter moved into a house with a similar rear garden in both instances I sprayed with Glyphosate and waited for all the weeds to die of which took approx 3 weeks, this also killed all roots the ground was dug over then rotavated after a couple more weeks, and since that initial work was done both were very productive
