What’s going on with my cactus?

I was just about to repot my cactus to save it. When I noticed that is has some sort of green and white stuff on it as you can see. What is this? Is my cactus still save-able? It’s not soft whatsoever and it has shrunk recently which is why I was trying to repot it.Can you please help?

Looking at the apparent density of the spines I would say that the body has shrunken and died ; the green looks like mould and the 'white-stuff' you poetically describe ;) resembles (or may be) the last vestiges of a colony of mealy-bug . Best to get rid !

How should I dispose of the cactus?

In a good hot compost heap.  Or the waste wheelie.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

  • Yes, definitely mealy bug in evidence here but probably a watering problem as well.  It is always better to under-water rather than te opposite but I have found that they can need more water than I think they do, especially in the summer months. RIP cactus.
