Seeds to sow in May

didywdidyw Posts: 3,573
As part of the Coronation celebrations in our town we are going to organise a 'find the packet of seeds in the shop window' competition for children.  (We are very much focusing on King Charles' conservation/green values and looking forward rather than back).

The winners will win half a dozen packets of seeds each - but what should they be to ensure the children have some success in growing them in May?

Mixed annuals - I got a pack every year when I was a kid to plant in my little bit of the garden :)
Some are marked - Easy annuals, with kids in mind

I'm thinking each winner will receive half a dozen packets of different seeds, so sunflowers, cosmos, mixed annuals, beans would be a good mix.  Anything else that can be sown in May?

Maybe something like salad leaves or cress that can be grown in smaller containers.

Nasturtiums would be good as well.

Thanks for all these great suggestions.  Just looked online - will have to go back to the committee regarding the cost of the prizes, seeds aren't cheap are they?  Or maybe our local GC can sponsor...

Your local GC should help.  You could also try one of the celebrity seed sponsors, like: Alan Titchmarsh or Sarah Raven, or the seed packers themselves.

If you can access a Wilkinsons shop their seeds are very inexpensive, I’ve used them and have had good results. Currently have an offer on a buy 3 and get cheapest packet free.

I mostly use this company, good reliable seeds.
