What surface to put under a bird feeder

    Yes - they'll hoover up most stuff!
    I use sunflower hearts and a no mess seed. Suits all of the birds we get here  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • I use the loose grain-free wild bird feed, with suet sticks and freeze-dried meal worms added. My local GC sells them all loose, they provide bags for you to put as much or little as you can afford, then they are weighed. Peanuts and fat balls go in hanging feeders with cages to keep off the jays and magpies. I very rarely have squirrels on my feeders as there are no large trees nearby, I have also fitted a baffle to stop rats from climbing up.

    I live pigeons too.
    Them and the collared doves hoover up most of the seed, which is good seeing as most of my feeders are on a gravel area!
