  • To be fair @nutcutlet I've only ever grown them on Suffolk clay ... I don't have any here although they're on my list.

I think they may do better on clay.  I had a lovely red one in our old clay garden but the one I have here on sand is struggling.

@Dovefromabove and @Fairygirl, it is extra dry here, dry soil and dry side of the country

  • Pretty similar here @nutcutlet ... and thinking about it, it's not a shrub I've noticed growing a lot in gardens around here.

I think that's the problem @nutcutlet. They need a reasonable soil with decent enough organic content. Possibly not worth it for you.  :/

I see them when I go visiting gardens in Lincs, better soil.

Much much better where MIL lives ... deeply envious.

There's loads of them round here - mainly the reds. I used to have a white one a very long time ago. Lovely plants.
Not worth going to lots of bother @nutcutlet - I know you're like me - they have to suit our conditions  ;)
I'm sure there'll be lots of things you can grow easily there that would be difficult here.  :)

I worked (briefly) as a gardener with my clients into Lincs. I could dig up and move things at any time as long as I watered them well to start, even if i wasn't going back for a week
