cordons and espaliers

Does anyone know if can successfully plant a cordon pear against a fence that has a substantial hedge on the other side?

Hedges suck a lot of life out of the adjacent soil. Personally I would not do it. Espaliers and cordons need to be on wires or against a wall.

Or between concrete posts on a fence using post brackets -

But I agree with fb - if there's a hedge on the other side I don't think it'll work
There's just bindweed on the other side of mine

    🙄

but I put in a root barrier - that seems to work - mostly

ok thanks for helpful  comments, I don't want to be  spending a lot of time and money on something that will always be at a disadvantage!
