Lupins - planting bare roots

What is the best type of compost to pot up bare root Lupins into, before final planting out in the spring?

Is John Innes No 1 suitable?

Lupins start into growth pretty early (mine are already showing new leaves) so I think they might be better with no.2 or even a standard multipurpose, if you can't plant them straight into the ground. Having said that, if JI No.1 is all you have, it would be better than keeping them dry until you can get to the shops, but you might want to give them a dose of general fertiliser later if they start to show signs of being hungry. They make a deep tap root so use deep pots.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
