Dahlia advice please…

Hello, my first time here…
my dahlias have been somewhat disappointing for the past couple of years. (Lots of leaves, few flowers).  I haven’t lifted them at all and I’m wondering if I should, and split them too?  If so, is it okay to dig them up now, and store them until after frost has passed?

Hi @jonjaxnhvGoZQ_I - if they've not been flowering well, it might be down to lack of food- they're very greedy plants.
If you lift them, it could well be possible to split them - if nothing else it'll let you see what condition they're in. Keep any pieces that are viable, ie not rotted or dried out, and keep them somewhere frost free and fairly dry until it's warm enough to get them back into growth.
Many people store them in dryish compost, newspaper or similar, and a porch or spare room is ideal, but it depends what facilities you have :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks.  That’s reassuring.
