Removal of privit hedging

My neighbour has removed his hedging from the boundary of pavement and garden. I am aware that a gas pipe runs along the inside of the pavement near the hedge and he used a digger. Are the roots strong and long enough to potentially cause damage to the gas pipe.

My old supply was changed over about 5 years ago.
They insert a plastic sleeve into the old metal pipe from the supply in the road to the meter.
When they done that for me, the supply didn't give enough pressure so they returned to install a new larger bore plastic pipe.
So it depends if your pipes have been sleeved/replaced or not.
