That looks great @Fairygirl I love the colour too......certainly inspired me to finish the job. That was my plan too - to make it wide enough to sit on.
Most (even all) plastics degrade in ultra-violet light. They become brittle. If they are intended for outside exposure, they are filled with carbon that absorbs th uv and makes the plastic black.
Your plastic that was buried may be still OK. Regarding the affect on plants, plastci bits should be no worse than plastic plant pots. However most plastic sheet is not intended for plants and may contain chemical. additives.
For longest life choose Polybutadiene pond liner, PVC pond liner may be next best, and any black sheeting quite adequate. Avoid white or clear.
