Pruning advice required

When we moved into our present house 17 years ago there was a rhododendron in the garden, Over the years it only grew very slowly with small pink flowers the variety is unknown, now it is looking straggly. Can if prune it to try and rejuvinate it?

You can cut them right back almost to the ground and they should regrow. I would wait until spring or even until after flowering though, rather than attacking it now.
Do you know whether you have acid soil and does it get enough water? You might get more vigorous growth if you can improve on the conditions.
