    I'm not an Acer expert, but I believe that coloured stem variants are onlt coloured for a while.  Eventually they mature to grey.
     location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

  • Thanks, @bede - I read that too - but I've only had mine for a year and it's only about 4ft tall.

    It depends on what you mean by grey, and where the grey bits are.
    This is why photos are so helpful  :)
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

    Had my Sango Kaku in Belgium for 20 years and the only grey bits were the dead bits at the ends, killed by frosts.   The trunk and older stems do grow dull as they age but more brown.   Definitely not grey.

    Same goes for the other varieties I have.

    Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.
