@JennyJ Yes I am sure he could have used it in different ways in different books. I have read most of his books some two or three times but many years ago. Sadly I no longer connect with them as much due to climate change. At the time I enjoyed them so much I could hear his voice speaking the words of the book and knew what was coming next.

I have also read Robin Lane Fox Thoughtful Gardening again many years ago a fascinating book in it's time. This is the only gardening book written by him I believe.

I’ve a feeling the pruning quite was in one of his Guardian pieces …  gentle google comes up with this which is along the same lines, but isn’t the piece I recall

Yes that is it, I am sure it was pruning related too. I would have read it in one of his books.
You would expect Christopher Lloyd to give instructions on when to do something but instead he does suggest when you feel like it {not sure of the exact words]  A bit of a shock to the reader who is expecting exact advice. That is why it stands out and has been repeated in various ways I believe.
We do lots of things in life only when we feel like doing them but I wouldn't prune a shrub just before it was about to flower, unless it was in need of complete renovation.

The trouble is, things don't stay dormant for as long as they used to.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

That's why it's so important to read it in the context in which it was said ... not just to quote snippets at random.   :)

@Dovefromabove  Regarding the quote I wrote down many years ago, would he have used the word 'hell' ? I am sure one of us will come across the exact words, he used it in relation  to pruning as we have said. Will post it if I find it.

There are lots of things I wouldn't do when I just 'felt like it' !  :D

As you say @Dovefromabove - context is important. With everything, not just gardens.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Very likely … he was not the most ‘retiring’ of writers. 😉

@Dovefromabove That is very true, one of the many reasons why so many gardeners enjoy his books. Will keep looking.....
