Experience of using a Tertill

  • The no dig approach for growing vegetables and thickly mulching the ground so the weed seeds find it much harder to germinate, may also help in this case. If you can cover the ground with a membrane as well then that could do a lot of the work. It's another option that may be worth looking into.

Mulching is her middle name!  I don't know is she uses the membrane stuff (dead useful, I have it in my glasshouse and under bark paths) but can probably find out whithout her thinking I am asking the question

I can't see it working in a densely-planted garden with not much bare soil showing, where many self-sowers are welcome - I can only weed borders by hand. It's tricky even to get a hoe in. And I'd need hundreds (or more) of the collars to put one around every plant. But for the kind of garden with a lot of space between a few large plants/shrubs and no large weeds etc already there, maybe it would work to keep it clear of seedling weeds in the same way as regular hoeing does.

Yes, my garden is like that.  Except that I foolishly let one or two thug plants get out of hand.  Hoes are OK if there is nothing just under the soil, but mine is so full of small bulbs ...

    There's a video here. https://youtu.be/JIFZewha1bI

I think it would work great on a flat surface with rows of crops where the surrounding soil needed to be kept weed free, e.g. a raised bed. While it weeds autonomously, you do have to do a bit of work to make little guards to prevent it weeding out seedlings.

HatfieldChris  It seems there could be value in the gadget for a specialist user like your sister, cost permitting!  As with all disabilities, she may need your help to lay out her patch in such a way that it can be worked by the Tertill within its stated limitations, but I'm sure any assistance would be welcome.  Good luck.

Would your sister consider joining the forum @HatfieldChris? It would be good have a blether with like minded people.

  • It's a thought.  Only trouble is that she would find me in this conversation.  Will mull that one over.
