  • The spring loaded squirrel busters are good for deterring starlings too. You can adjust them to work with different weights, so not just for heavier squirrels. The starlings can obviously still hoover up anything on the ground but at least they can't actually empty the feeder.

I agree about the starlings they really are a pain.We have a lot of wood pigeons too and they’re the same ……greedy guts ! I went to buy my usual wild bird food today and the price had all but doubled , can’t afford it so any ideas what I can feed the birds with instead ?

I have a dish in a hanging basket, with a big plastic bowl on top hanging from a bush, small birds can get in, the jackdaws don't even bother it.. I'm sure a squirrel could jump and spill the dish, but they never have. It's not the prettiest thing, but I'm sure you could rig something better looking up and hang it off a twig. Mine's attached with string and a garden wire hook. That makes me sound so council. 😄

There was a video on Twitter or YouTube, I can't remember which, in which someone had put one of those child's Slinky spring things ariound their pole, (pole through the middle ofit)  attached at the top only so that it just hung down. When the squirrel tried to climb it, the Slinky would stretch and he coudn't get any further.
