    You might be getting some chewing from the pesky slugs and snails, but other than that, the plants are fine. Molluscs can certainly devastate young, new growth, which is very frustrating  :)
    As they mature, the stems do get woody and tatty looking. It's why we were a bit confused as to what you felt the problem was. Just keep an eye out for any areas being rubbed from string too. That can easily damage stems - even mature ones, especially if the wind catches them. I regularly have to re tie, or add more ties to mine, depending on the site because they get broken quite easily. 
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
