It often gets pronounced as in the other 'Straths' in your comment @nick615, but it's Strayvin, emphasis on the 'stray'. I think because it was shortened - Stra'ven, but I'd have to investigate that.  :)
I often wonder if you get the same problem that we get here with folk not being able to pronounce  loch. You have lough, which I think you pronounce the same way?
Means the same thing anyway, as far as I'm aware, although there may be subtle differences? I expect you an put me right on that.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • The people doing the Shipping Forecasts are definitely getting better at Loch @Fairygirl ;)  It's a shame it doesn't cover the whole of Ireland tho because there would surely be some other interesting pronunciations to practice.
Sad life isn't it and bog all to do with the thread title :D

An amusing little diversion @philippasmith2, as is often the case eh?  :D
I'm supposed to be sewing, sorting photos and uploading CDs onto the laptop, but I keep getting distracted by looking up various bits of info online about my favourite artists, and enjoying hearing albums I've not listened to in ages.
    JW just now though...

I was going to ask the same question @nick615!
    How about Strathaven?
We like to try and trick people... ;)

Aye, Lass.  I was involved in manning a stall in the Ideal Homes Exhibition where one of the things we had to do was take names and addresses of visitors to send them a catalogue.  Nae problems with the likes of Anniesland, Bearsden OR mulgay, Fairygirl!

Mulgay is how then posh folk will pronounce it. Lesser mortals will say Milguy 😀
