terracotta, it's always worth giving them a coat of varnish or PVA to protect them a bit more.
Both would turn terracotta into non-breathable plastic, so spoiling their aesthetic and functional benefits.    PVA is water sensitive so wouldn't last long.

If you don't like chemicals, better avoid using them.
Thanks  I'll have a think. I do love terracotta pots in all shapes and sizes.

I paint a lot of mine @francesmckeon21 . I'm not keen on terracotta anyway. Too 'cottage garden' for me, but they're useful, and you can get them in so many outlets.
I have three really good quality ones. They withstand much more severe weather, and the cycle of wet/freeze/thaw.  They're straight sided, which is also a good feature as they don't get cowped so easily.  Glazed pots are the best, but are often very expensive. Depends on your budget  :)
I had some of those resin ones years ago, which look like terra or even lead. The lead ones are very good, but they don't last more than a few years here either.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
