Green scale on my Acer

My acer has a green scale at the junctions of branches and strange green patches on the main trunk. Does anybody know what these are?

The ones on the branches look like lichen. Not sure about trunk. It looks too smooth. Did you rub it off?
    It doesn't do any harm.

Lichen, a sign of clean air and not something to worry about.
  • Thank you. Lichen sounds like a good thing. My yorkstone paving is covered in lichen so I suspect the spores have landed on the Acer. The green patches on the main trunk are different, smooth not scaley and flush with the bark. Any ideas?
  • It's still lichen - there are  different forms and some are more encrusted than others. Some grow what look like little antlers :)
  • Thanks. that's very reassuring.

I love lichen. Beautiful, and not always given the attention it deserves.
Enjoy the link @Dovefromabove has posted @Joanne.t.clarke  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I loved the lichen video, amazing, I had no idea.
  • Glad you liked it Joanne … welcome to the Lichen Lovers’ Club 😃

Have a look around the area you live in @Joanne.t.clarke - you'll see it on branches, fence posts and all sorts of places.
It sometimes drops off - I noticed a lovely clump on the footpath today when I was out for my walk  :)

I just remembered these photos from 5 or 6 years ago, on a walk near Arrochar
