Carnation cuttings

Hello all, I took cuttings of my carnation plant in summer/autumn and they have successfully grown. What I don’t know is if I can plant them in the garden now or should I pot them on as they’re only a few centimetres high ready for planting out in the spring? Also, is it too late to take lavender cuttings? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

No - pot them on and wait until they're a decent size for planting next year.
If they have roots filling the pots they're in, you can move them to a slightly bigger pot. If you have several cuttings around a pot, and they all have roots, you can move them into a two or three inch pot of their own. They sound more like the latter   :)

Can't help with lavender, as I don't like it or grow it. You might need to start a separate thread though as people may only look at this one if they can help with the carnations, due to the title  :)

  • Thanks Fairygirl, you’ve confirmed what I thought was best approach. I’ll put another post for the lavender query. 😊👍

I think the best time for the lavender would have been when trimming back after flowering - so late summer/early autumn, like your carnations, but someone else will confirm or deny.
