Houseplant identification and losing lower leaves

Hello!
Is anyone able to advise what might the issue with this houeplant? I think it could be an Syngonium, although it could Also have been mis labelled as I've struggled to properly find out what it is.

It's mostly healthy and been growing well, but it's consistently losing it's lower leaves. They turn yellow slowly and die. Now some of these lower leaves have a strange spot on them.

I was advised it could be over watering, so I've not watered it for weeks and weeks. However it is still continuing.

So perhaps it's under watered? But I have several other plants growing happily with what I'd call normal watering, perhaps every 1-2 weeks.

And advice would be greatly appreciated, as well as identification.

Many thanks
Kate

  • I can’t help with the issue, but the plant might be philodendron tripartitum.
  • Thank you pitter- patter. That tip helped me look further and now I wonder if it is a syngonium auritum as the leaves match very well with this. And I've just seen they might like more acid soil which could be it.
    Any other thoughts greatfully received.
    Thanks

  • Might it be this? https://www.conservatoryarchives.co.uk/products/syngonium-trileaf-wonder

I have one too and in the last month or so it has gone downhill rapidly, with the lower leaves turning yellow. Like you I worried about overwatering and then underwatering! In the end I took drastic action as it looked so bad - I chopped it right back and am growing two of the lead stems in water as cuttings and hoping the patent plant will put out new shoots. Fingers crossed.

I wonder if the lack of as much light at this time of year is part of the problem.
  • Oh, wow, they do look similar. I’ve never come across that syngonium. I wish you all the best with it and I’m sorry I couldn’t help more.
  • Thank you parka66, that is interesting to know! Definitely makes me think it is a Syngonium - I'm going to check for root rot, get some new soil, and perhaps also take the tip cuttings as you have done too.
Thanks for the help and ideas!

Nobody seems to have helped you with thw leaf-dying problem.  Unless the plant is fading away, I wouldn't worry.  Leaves don't last forever and it is always the older leaves that die first.

But get on top of your watering.  A plant with succulent stems can go without water for some time. but a regime like a regular water once a week, all water removed from the cache-pot, and allowing to dry out in-between should suit yours, whatever its name.
