Yes you will miss out on the red stems this year which is a shame but it could also be a positive. Rather than hitting it hard with drastic pruning in the spring, cutting it back part way now is a start. In the spring you can be braver an cut back hard.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

    GardenerSuze..
Did you see the last pics after pruning?
I don't think it could have another cm removed next spring.
That is a very hard prune.

  • Hi, I would like to reiterate my previous post to must be some kind of ''a'' Red Twig Dogwood I also agree with silver surfer because of the leaves his definition may be the correct definition id name. I followed the general pruning topic from https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/dogwood/rejuvenation-pruning-red-twig-dogwood.htm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6i3BrLfvt8&t=90s that is a very savage prune so I think I'm ok to prune to its last cut level and leave my rental property without any more worry.

If the landlord's expectation is that the shrubs are left looking "tidy", I think you've met that, and I wouldn't worry too much. They're lucky to have had a tenant who takes an interest rather than just hacking everything at some random time.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Thanks all- that has helped me ID a shrub too. Really happy !
