Is it too late?

Is it too late to cut back a purple smokebush?
The majority of the bush is less than a couple of feet tall but there are four branches which are a foot higher than the rest. It's planted in an area that isn't very sheltered and I am thinking that the longer branches may get damaged during winter.
Is it better to leave alone or cut back?
many thanks

not too late. My initial info on this plant said to prune when growth starts in Spring so I did that for a few years. One year I did it in January and it had a very  good year so I prune much earlier now

    In the sticks near Peterborough

I cut a branch off my young one yesterday as it was growing in the wrong direction.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
