I've just planted a load of bulbs in this deep tub. As there's space for more earth could I feasibly plant more bulbs on top and cover with another 6 inches of soil? Or will that somehow ruin the bulbs below? Any help gratefully received
Yes. I would use small bulbs for the top layer like Iris or crocus. That way you can have six inches over the daffs or tulips and and two inches over the crocus.
@bapw163 If you have planted tulips and want to add more, I would choose from the same group. That way they should flower at the same time, you won't have messy leaves[ that you shouldn't cut back until six weeks after flowering] in amoungst the tulips that are about to flower .These can go in at a depth of 6inches
Crocus are a good idea as the leaves after flowering are only small and pretty in their own way if you have a varigated form. Iris Reticulata is another possible but the addition of grit will be necessary. they are early flowering and afterwards leaves will continue to grow. Avoid Galanthus best' planted in the green'.
The biggest problem with planting lots of different bulbs in a pot is the fact that they different flowering times. This might seem like a positive as you get a succession of flowers but you also have leaves that need to die back naturally. This can spoil the look.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
