Yes I work the trench for runner beans system. I fill this from March to May. The rest of the year I have a two bay compost heap constructed of newspaper "bricks". No mixing, just add as it comes. I start emptying the 2-yearold heap in ca March; the less well rotted compost starts the bean trench; then the front lawn; then around azaleas and rhododendrons.
Every garden needs a compost heap; a small garden needs just a small compost heap. For indoor plants or a window box can use the council slops-bucket. There is never enough compost from home resources.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand. "Have nothing in your garden that you don't know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
