Dead shrub cover

I had what I thought was a dead shrub in between 2 box hedges. When I tried to dig it out I found it's an off shoot of what looks like a root from a cherry tree so I want to leave it alone but I keep forgetting it's  there and falling over it. This morning I've  sprained my ankle. So I'd like some suggestions for something to put over it until it rots down that is OK to look at.

I'd use a pruning saw to remove it at ground level now, if possible.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

I'd also saw it out @Karhodgson . It'll still be a trip hazard if you cover it over, unless I'm misunderstanding your description. If it isn't sticking up too much, you might be able to lay bark on each side or something similar.
Cherry roots often travel above ground, or only just below. If you saw it off at the end where it joins the tree, you might be able to lever it up and get it out that way. I've done that before, although the tree was already done, so it wasn't difficult to remove.
It will depend on the maturity of the tree though, what the root looks like, and whether it's necessary for the tree's survival  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Thanks both. The cherry tree the toot comes from is alive and well hence I don't  want to damage it. I had tried sawing it but due to its position it was difficult to get to. A pruning saw is a good shout so I'll  give that a go. Thanks for your help

Hopefully that will work for you. It's easier for that kind of thing than a standard saw  :)
