Well now. Can you give us some more information?  How old is it, what sort of position is it in, what's your soil like, what area of the country are you in?
Twelve feet sounds quite young to me and they are tender, fussy plants that grow vigorously when they are happy but soon dwindle and die in the wrong place. So any information you can provide would be helpful.

They can be a menace when happy!

We have two - mature when we moved here and both producing suckers and seedlings with gay abandon.   We removed all the suckers we could and crown lifted both to improve their shape and allow us to pass underneath.   One is now acceptable and a lovely form but t'other, at the back of our veg plot is a thug, sending roots and runners and suckers all over the place and casting just a bit too much shade.  It's getting a severe haircut next month.

When they do flower it's an acid shade of yellow against a dark, glaucous green which I find an unattractive combination and then the flowers fade to a dull beige before dropping seeds.

I love them but I can't grow the them! My site is very windy and just burns off the leaves.

Windy here too especially along the coast and yet they thrive.  'Appen it's just that bit warmer for them so they cope.

I see them as a Mediterraneum shrub, or for a conservatory.  But I have seen them cut to the ground in Nice.

Where are you doing your gardening?

Definitely not a shrub!  This is one of our two after we'd removed all the suckers at the base and raising the crown.   It's as tall as the barn, so two storeys.
