Daphnes seem to be extremely "iffy". They can live for years totally neglected or only a few years. They seem to hate being moved, I lost 2 moving houses, bought 3 replacements and none lived for more than 5 years, they were in pots in a sheltered corner of my garden. I bought one for my daughter and it suddenly turned up its toes with no warning and expired. My grandfather was a skilled gardener but it took him several years to cultivate a cutting of daphne. I wonder if a lot of us cosset them too much, also perhaps the different cultivars have slightly different requirements. I love them but cannot afford to keep replacing them. When I was a child we had a huge bush in the garden. It had no care, it just grew, the perfume was wonderful and it was always thick with flowers. A glorious childhood memory.
Our daphne gave up the ghost after 20 years as yours has done. It was a great plant and much missed for the fragrance. So we planted last year Daphne bholua Jaqueline Postill. It flowered and the scent was great. It has doubled in size (more upright than odora)

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
Can the wilt affect young plants too, @Silversurfer?
