Has anyone else noticed this?

I received a bulb lasagna last year at Christmas.  Four layers, as I remember.  But, in September, the crocuses started sprouting.  I think they're all up now.  No flowers, of course, but will they flower at the proper time or what's going on?  I live in Aberdeen - pretty mild winter last year, no snow, and not a lot of heat in the summer either.

My rhododendron flowered profusely in the spring and I cut it back from 4ft to around 18 inches once flowering had finished. It soon produced new growth and leaves and is now flowering again. We have had nearly two weeks non-stop rain and some night temperatures of 2 degrees C but I have not known it to flower twice in a season.

Muscari start appearing as grass-like shoots now - could they have been included in your mix?

Don't expect Year 2 bulbs to flower at the same time as last year.  Or at all.

  • I have bulbs coming up early everywhere. Also have a new head on one of my hydrangeas and loads of the buds are opening to fresh leaves, I think next summer will be a bust as any even light frost is going to ruin the buds which are too far developed before the winter. Crazy weather, spring in November!

Alliums are all up... I have disturbed a fair few daffodils while planting new roses and those look ready to break through the surface, too! Not early flowering varieties.
My clematis Wisley Cream is already flowering which seems early.🤔

  • Thank you all for your comments.  PlantMinded - There WERE some very pale blue muscari in the mix.  I'm gonna check what those leaves look like, as opposed to crocus leaves!  Thanks for that suggestion.

It's certainly quite likely that's what they are @marymary123456. The foliage appears now and the flowers are in spring. You may find they just take over at the expense of other bulbs, as they can be a bit invasive.
If the bulbs have been in there since last autumn/winter, you should have had some of them flowering though. Do you know what any of them were? If the container is small, they may well be mostly smaller bulbs/flowers like crocus and the muscari and maybe some dwarf daffs. There should have been some signs of life in spring though.

It might be worth emptying the pot and separating the different types so that you can see what's viable, and then potting them up separately. The reticulata irises are usually iffy after the first year, and tulips can be the same apart from the species ones. Most spring bulbs are pretty reliable though year on year unless they get very congested.

Small bulbs can get eaten/taken by those grey tree rats, so I always put some mesh or netting over pots if they have any of the smaller bulbs in them. That keeps the little b*ggers out  ;)
