Winter care for Fuchias

I have taken in my Fuchias into my shed for the winter. I was wondering if they should be cut back or not yet. Also, if the need watering over the winter at any point? Any advice to protect my plants would be appreciated?

I normally overwinter mine in a cold greenhouse.  If you want to save space, cut them back, the falling leaves may be messy.   But you will still need to tidy them up further when growth restarts.

I check regularly and make sure that the compost is never bone dry.  You will need to give them a good plunge-soak in the spring.  If there is no light, you may get etiolated growth.

Frost free is the maxim.  But I think many will withstand brief periods below zero.

Some fuchsias are totally hardy and will survive happily outside, others are tender and can need various degrees of protection.

  • Our 2  were cut back outside very very hard this year and they have flowered the best that we have known. They are outdoors and we don't do anything to help them in frost situations.

A lot will depend on whereabouts you are - ie your location and climate @stuart.dilworth, but it's as @punkdoc says - many are bone hardy and many are tender, so if you know which ones you have, that will help with any advice  :)
