Hello,

I bought seeds of a plant which supposed to give bright red flowers. The plant is slowly growing for the last three years, but I don't see any flowers. I bought the seeds after watching a BBC programme with Carol Klein. She showed very beautiful red flowers and said they grow in damp conditions. Could you please ID the plant.

  • It looks like Hesperantha coccinea, aka Schizostylis.

They are late flowerers. here it is September/October time.
How can you lie there and think of England

  • Is it in full sun? That is what they like and a moist soil. Common name Kaffir Lily. They do like to be in the garden and are happy to be lifted split and moved around in spring. Have they become congested?

Could it be Dierama pulcherrimum or Angel's Fishing Rod?  That likes damp conditions.

There's a big difference between damp soil that has adequate drainage, and a bog.
Your pot look absolutely saturated, and the ground it's sitting on looks the same.

Does the pot have drainage? What is the plant growing in?

I'd agree it looks very like Hesperantha [Schizostylus] and they flower in autumn, and often at this time of year. There are lots round here still flowering away, as the weather has been mild and autumn has been very late.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I replanted them in the bigger pot today and added the Miracle compost. It's damp because of the recent rain. I should move this to the sunny side as it in shade all the time, thanks.
