My friend assures me that the photo has not been manipulated. He just happened to be in Tokyo at a time when the display was at its best, so good, in fact, it featured on the national news
Some camera software veers more towards the blue scale for landscapes ... particularly on auto mode ... it reads the scene and makes choices it deems appropriate ... taking the same scene on Manual and then Auto settings can sometimes be quite revealing.

I agree with Dove that camera setting will have an impact. I read somewhere that a 'cloudy' colour balance setting will give warmer colours, so that's what I use all the time. In bright sun it brings out tropical colours

In my garden, In I have several Acers. a couple of Liquidambars, a Nyssa and several deciduous azaleas. Briefly in the autumn I get some colour but it is very fleeting.
Basically, I like all these plants for their contributions throughout the year. The autumn colour is just a small bonus.
In Japanese culture, the very fleetingness is what they revere. That is why they flock to cheerry* blossom displays and autumn leaf colour. And, now I know, Kochia as well.
