A lot of strange holes in my yard.

Hello There,

I'm quite new  to gardening and (as you can see in the pictures) my yard it's becoming light green and with a LOT of this "balls of mud" I did find some snails/slugs there, but they can do this kind of destruction? I did put some snail poison today (The blue balls) but start to be quite worried about it.

Anyone have seen this before? This is the work of snail/slugs? This is another thing?

Thanks!

Worm casts. Happens at this time of year.
  • Thank you so much! What I can do about it?

Hi, are you in the US?
The piles may be just worm castings - great for aerating and giving nutrient to your mossy lawn. You can raken them across the surface if they bother you.

    Celebrate the worms!

cerebrate all wildlife and lay off the poisons. We're killing everything including ourselves

  • Oh, I didn't Know about it! I'm on the UK! I will lay off the poison, thank so much!

@uktenoriomarcusRLYjO-hB You need the worms that will encourage the birds who will enjoy the slugs and snails too.  As you are fairly new to gardening this is a good place to start. Enjoy!

Yes, worm casts, which can just be brushed back into the grass.

I agree about avoiding using poison pellets for the slugs and snails. I know they can be annoying little devils, but the problem with those pellets is that they harm other wildlife, too. Other creatures might just devour the pellets directly, eg, a hedgehog. Poisons can be passed indirectly to different animals, too, if they happen to eat something which has eaten poison.

The wider variety of wildlife you have, the better it is for your garden, and the wider variety of natural predators you will have. If you have a problem with slugs and snails in the future, you can try baiting them with beer traps or better still try placing them on your bird table for the birds (if they stay still long enough for the birds to find them  :)).

Welcome to the forum, by the way. It’s a wonderful place for obtaining lots of information as there are many experienced people on here, so I do hope you will enjoy visiting, asking questions and finding solutions.

Yes, a big welcome to the forum.
  • To have casting worms is a sign of a healthy soil! It's taken a couple of years in my little new build lawn for the worms to start enjoying themselves. It's only select few earthworms that cause casting.

They enjoy the mild and wet weather and needs frosts for them to head downwards. It's a huge pain in the sports turf sector with a lack of cost effective solutions for them but easy enough to brush on a dry day when it comes to lawns.

A lawn is generally mainly grass species.  I suggest you re-post your pics under the heading: "how do I turn this into a lawn?"  You should get the required advice.
