I agree totally with your last sentence @Busy-Lizzie. I couldn't leave them in the ground here, even in the best sites I have. I think if leaving them in the ground [and cutting back] in a wet area but where the soil is free draining and warmer, it would be better to use a cloche or similar over them to prevent that water ingress. Cold wet conditions are never good for them, as with many plants.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
