Banana Palm looking a little poorly….

Hi everyone,

Please take a look at my Banana palm above. It’s been doing so well until the last few days. Basically it’s started to wilt and get black spots upon its leaves. I’ve been watering and feeding it normally but I can’t work out why it is so unhappy…

any ideas?

I know little about banana plants, but I’ve turned the pic the right way up for you, so folk can get a better look   There’s a bit of a glitch on the site when uploading photos. 😊

    Hello Noel and co
How long have you had it? Where are you? Ours now have started to die off for winter,it's a normal process. We cut off the leaves to a few inches, then they go in the green house, for winter. If you don't have one, garage, shed,it's water in the crown you need to avoid.

I gather it's a truly tropical indoor variety? A temperature fluctuation overnight might have triggered it to die back. Or perhaps it's because light levels are dropping, shorter days etc.

I was wondering what the night time temperature is by that big window?
    Are there blinds or shutters?

My thoughts too. It can get very cold next to a window.

  • That’s very kind of you @Dovefromabove! Yeah I couldn’t figure out why it posted that way around.

@Nanny Beach - I’ve actually grown it over about two years from a cutting of another palm. We are in Reading and keep it in the lounge with lots of sun. Perhaps it’s just winding down for the winter… I have been spraying it with mist… so perhaps that water has rolled down into the crown? I can put it in the garage.
  • You all have a point.

I put the blinds down at night but perhaps I should move it away from the window. It usually gets a fair amount of light there.

I would say that pot is nowhere near big enough, I have one outside in a pot, and one in the ground. The pot is approx 80cm x 80cm. And even at that size I have to water and feed regularly.

I agree about the pot size, but I didn't mention that,as that would be a job for next spring. I  have never heard of an "indoor" banana. I am assuming this is a Musa Basjoo, ours go in a frost free green house, they haven't been brought in yet. Do you put it outside in the warmer months? Even the pups taken off this year, get the same overwintering treatment. When I said water in the crown,I was thinking about a large amount of rain, then a sudden very cold snap or frost. A lot of folk keep larger ones outside over winter. Of course not suggesting that with yours, but I cannot imagine a night time temperature in a house near a window would harm it at all.

Have you inspected the banana leaves for pests? Musa can be subject to spider mite and those little darlings can remain all but invisible until the plant suddenly looks rather sick. Have to look for tiny pale dots and something resembling closely woven spiders web. The plants are more likely to suffer from spider mite when they are grown indoors.
I wouldn't expect a banana plant to die back in autumn if it is kept indoors so it is unlikely to be a reaction to shorter days and cooler outdoor temperatures.
